As you sit down with Mary, her personality immediately shines through. This 82-year-old resident at Mercy Place Parkville never imagined she would end up in an aged care home, but after a stroke in late October 2023, with the support of her sons she found a respite place to support her.
“I trusted my sons to pick the right place for me.”
When they found Mercy Place Parkville, Mary was pleasantly surprised by the home.
“The room was a pleasant surprise. It was spacious, with its own bathroom, and the staff encouraged me to personalise it with my own pictures.”
Mercy Place Parkville quickly became Mary’s sanctuary, a place she could call her own, much like her house in Melton where she had lived with her late husband for 18 years. The personal touches such as a favourite chair in her room, cupboards and room for photos have made it feel like home.
“I like the freedom to do what I want. I can walk anywhere, I can live my life just like I did at home.”
Mary started to feel more comfortable during her respite stay, appreciating the balance of independence and support that Mercy Place Parkville offered. The staff were always polite, ready to help, and caring, making her feel safe and valued.
“The staff were fantastic. They are all so polite—nothing is too much trouble.”
The decision to move from respite to permanent care was not a difficult one, when Mary saw that the continued support was invaluable to her. The staff’s response to a medical incident cemented Mary’s decision.
“The support they provided during my recovery was extraordinary. They even got me a walker to help me move around more easily.”
This level of care and attention gave Mary a sense of security she hadn’t felt in a long time.
Mary has also found joy in the social activities offered at the home. She has made friends with Joe, the resident ‘joker’ from the Lifestyle Team, and enjoyed participating in various events and raffles, often winning and becoming the subject of friendly jokes.
“When my family visit, we love to visit the onsite café, Cup of Joy. We can stay for lunch …. we can stay as long we like.”
Mary’s decision to make Mercy Place Parkville her permanent home was solidified by the sense of community and the compassionate care she received.
The home wasn’t just a place to live; it became a place where she could continue to enjoy her life, surrounded by people who are dedicated to caring for her 24 hours a day.
The memories of her previous home in Melton are honoured in her new space — filled with photos and mementos — making it truly feel like home.
“I am grateful every day for the new chapter in my life at Mercy Place Parkville. The warmth, freedom, and support I have found here is heart-warming. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
