The Royal Show visits our residents

Bringing the Royal Show to Mercy Place seniors

Residents at Edgewater Mercy Hostel are set to have their very own ‘Royal Show’ experience – without even having to leave the popular not-for-profit home in Perth’s northern suburbs.

That’s because the lifestyle and care team at the home has arranged for a host of farm animals to visit residents, and as well as rabbits, ducklings, guinea pigs, piglets and sheep, there will be a very special inclusion of a miniature pony.

Mercy Place Edgewater Service Manager, Pammy Singh, says the nursing home’s staff, including nurses and carers, have been preparing for the ‘country visit’ for several weeks.

Everyone at the home is incredibly excited about the animals visiting

“Everyone is incredibly excited about the animals visiting,” she says.

“Many of our residents weren’t able to get along to the actual Royal Show, but the fact that they have their own version of the traditional annual event to look forward to is a real bonus for them.

“Research has shown how therapeutic animals are, which is why we wanted to bring this scaled-down version of the Royal Show to them; for our team here it’s all about ensuring our residents have enriched lives and can continue to do the things that they have always loved.

“I think the experience will also instigate a trip down memory lane, whereby our seniors will have the opportunity to reminisce about the past and their time spent at The Royal Show in years gone by,” Pammy says.
