Information for Templestowe residents and families

Dear Mercy Place Templestowe residents and families

An update from our home

I want to begin this update by acknowledging each of our residents. Every person at our home brings something special: their life story, their interests, their beliefs and values. We are experiencing a strange and difficult time throughout this global pandemic, but we have not lost sight of the things that matter: our loved ones and the relationships that sustain us. Thank you to all of our residents, families and staff for the love, care and support you are providing one another at this challenging time.

Resident and staff testing results

We have good news to share about yesterday’s testing: all residents and staff have again returned negative results. This is the fifth round of tests that has come back negative — what a fantastic outcome.

Next steps for our home

Once our residents and families have breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing today’s good news, I know the next question will be: ‘What next?’ In a few of these daily updates I have mentioned that the next step for our home will be to move into ‘enhanced surveillance’. This is a step down from the current outbreak response.

The Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Unit (PHU) will determine when it is safe for our home to move to enhanced surveillance. I have been in regular contact with the PHU to find out when we can take this step. They have advised that there will be another round of testing the week starting 12 October. If the results come back negative from that round of testing, they will consider giving us the green light to move to enhanced surveillance sometime in the week starting 19 October.

It is important for me to be open and transparent with our residents and families, which is why I am sharing these dates with you. However, please be aware that the PHU will have the final say about each of these dates and milestones. There is always a chance that the decision will change, or that dates will be pushed back. Our residents and families have been incredibly resilient thus far and I know that you will bear with us even if these dates change.

I also acknowledge that these dates might seem distant but we need to make sure that our transition out of our current outbreak response is done safely. Everyone has made such a big effort so far to rid our home of coronavirus and we do not want to risk throwing all of that effort away. You are all doing a remarkable job and I am so grateful for your ongoing support.

Resident wellbeing

Our residents are generally well and keeping engaged with in-room activities. Some of our passionate football fans have been watching their teams play in the first round of finals. For some there is despair not seeing their team walk away with a win, but for others there is pure joy as their team inches closer to the Grand Final.

Communication with residents and families

We are continuing regular calls to primary contacts. We are also continuing these daily written updates for primary contacts and residents, to keep you up to date about what is happening at our home. We appreciate if you could share this information with other family members, so they too are aware of what is happening at our home.

If you require specific information about your loved one, please call the Clinical Care Coordinator. For general enquiries, please call between 10am–2pm.

Thank you for your continued support.
