Dear Mercy Place Dandenong residents and families

Today’s update from our home

Staff test results

We received the news late yesterday that a further three staff members have returned positive results after staff re-testing on Thursday (20 August). We have spoken to the Department of Health and Human Services (State) Public Health Unit and the Department of Health (Commonwealth) and undertook contact tracing right away. Through the contact tracing I have been identified as a close contact and will be working from home until the appropriate tests and time have passed for me to return to working on site. Please be assured there will remain management presence on site, with my continued oversight, during this period.

I know this feels like a further setback, however it is much better to have discovered these new cases early through re-testing. We know that many people carry the virus without showing any symptoms. Testing and re-testing is the only way we can find out just how many people in our home have the virus, which means we can then act on that information.

As a priority, we had a team of cleaners back in our home today to undertake a thorough deep clean of the affected areas. Residents may notice the pungent smell of the hospital-grade cleaning chemicals that we use. They are not pleasant to smell, but incredibly effective at killing the virus. As always, thank you for your patience as we perform these necessary measures for everyone’s safety.

Resident wellbeing

While residents are mostly well, there is certainly a sombre and subdued mood in the home today. Like the weather, spirits are low. Rest assured we are keeping a close eye on how residents are faring, both physically and emotionally. If there is any change in behaviour or pattern, we are ready to respond straight away. We encourage residents to let us know if you need support or if you want to talk to someone about how you feel. We are here with you.

Calls to families

We will keep making daily phone contact with families from the affected house. Other families will continue to be informed through this daily email, unless there is an important update, in which case we will call you directly. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Stay warm and well.
